Health & Safety

In the past three years, O’Donnell Griffin's safety record has improved dramatically, exceeding its year on year target reduction in the Loss Time Injury Frequency Rate (LTIFR) and Total Recordable Injury Frequency Rate (TRIFR).

Our safety management system in Australia is third-party accredited to AS4801. In New Zealand we are accredited to the tertiary level of the ACC Workplace safety management program. Our ultimate goal is to ensure all projects become incident free workplaces.

Measuring the effectiveness of safety program:
Injury statistics or other lagging indicators provide an overall estimate of the progress required to achieve “zero harm”, but they do not measure the effective implementation of safety programs, proactive action plans or preventative activities in place. To address this, Norfolk has developed a lead indicators program which enables us to use a combination of lead and lag indicators to measure overall safety effectiveness and performance. The lead indicators will be used to measure and drive activities to prevent and control injury, damage or loss and influence organisational behaviour.

Focus on behavioural change:
The “Safe Behaviours” program targets several key areas of safety management including:

  • improving the use of Safe Work Method Statements (Job SafetyAnalysis)
  • management of LTI and “Return to Work” programs
  • the use of stand down meetings to communicate important safety information post incident
  • the performance of root cause analysis incident investigations
  • the development and deployment of a Hazard and Risk Assessment tool to allow for a more accurate assessment of site specific risks prior to work starting on the site.
